NHS Trust fined for glutaraldehyde exposure

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust has been fined for exposing an employee to the hazardous chemical glutaraldehyde.
HSE inspectors visiting the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston discovered that the woman had been cleaning an X-ray film processor for several years without proper precautions, exposing her to the substance, which can cause long-term ill health including skin and respiratory problems. Inspectors banned the use of the film processor until the Trust had taken steps to control the risks.

Construction director imprisoned for fatal fall

A construction firm director has been imprisoned after admitting the manslaughter of a worker who fell through a skylight at a site in Norfolk. Sharaz Butt, director of Norwich-based Alcon Construction, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment over the death of Chinese national Wu Zhu Weng. The company, which has virtually no money or assets, received a token £10 fine.

Control of Noise at Work Regulations to come into force for music and entertainment sectors

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (Noise Regulations) came into force for the music and entertainment sectors on 6th April bringing them in line with all other sectors where regulations have been in force since April 2006. The noise regulations will now apply to pubs and clubs, amplified live music events, orchestras and other premises where live music or recorded music is played.
