Europe’s largest asbestos removal project approaches completion

Calder Hall Power Station Hex

In 1995, after approval from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, decommissioning of Calder Hall Power Station commenced. Calder Hall was Britain’s first nuclear power station, operational from 1956 to 2003. Contracted to provide asbestos monitoring and consultancy, Environmental Evaluation has had a semi-permanent office and UKAS-accredited laboratory at Calder Hall since 2005. Our team of four specialists has worked closely with the Sellafield Ltd. Project Team and asbestos removal companies to support what has been the largest single asbestos removal project in Europe.

Over 2000 tonnes of asbestos-containing and non-asbestos lagging has been removed from the site. Detailed waste analysis by Environmental Evaluation has been used to determine waste routes and has resulted in considerable savings to the project.

The main phase of the asbestos bulk stripping operation is due to finish in 2010, after a total of over 820,000 contractors’ hours worked.
